Luke 11:28 – But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

A woman had noted that it must have been wonderful to have been Jesus’ mother. Jesus pointed out that a physical relationship was unimportant compared with hearing and obeying the Word of God. This does not demean Mary; but it does honor and bless the one who hears and keeps God’s word. The idea of a physical relationship was much more important in that day. Being the mother of the Lord Jesus was certainly a wonderful privilege for Mary. However, having a Son that would one day become her Lord, was an even greater privilege. Family relationships are not the most important things in this life. The whole nation of Israel took pride in the fact that they descended from Abraham. It is easy to allow traditional practices to take the place of the authority of the Scriptures. Jesus offers His blessing to those who respond concretely to God’s will as expressed in the Bible. You can make the choice to serve God in holiness, or to obey your sinful nature.

Challenge:

Jesus clearly states in this verse that those who keep and follow Gods Word will be blessed for doing so. The first step in following the Word is to hear it and come to know it. Are you taking the necessary time every day to invest in bible reading? Your challenge this week is to put down the magazines and the novels and pick up your bible. Make a commitment today to read the bible more than any other book you may have. Set aside the amount of time you would usually use to scroll through Instagram or Facebook and read one chapter in your bible. Then put into practice what that chapter was instructing the believers in that time. For example, if the text was speaking about praying for others, take a moment and pray for someone.  Get the Word of God inside of you and watch how the Word will begin to come out of you. Be blessed this week just as Jesus promises in this week’s verse and keep the Word of God. God bless you.
