1 Timothy 6:17 – Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
Christianity does not require a vow of poverty or the forsaking of wealth, for Paul wrote, command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty. Some followers of Christ will be wealthy by society’s standards. However, this verse puts wealth in perspective. These rich ones might be wealthy now, but they must use their riches responsibly if they will be rich in the age to come. The rich should not trust in, more literally, “the uncertainty of riches.” Great resources give you the appearance of providing security, the fact is that the only sure thing in this world is the word of God. Therefore, the rich are exhorted to trust in the living God, who gives us all richly things to enjoy. One of the great snares of riches is that it is difficult to have them without trusting in them. God is the Source of true enjoyment and material things cannot produce this in your life. Pride is a constant danger when it comes to riches. It is very easy to believe that we are more important because we have more than another man has. God knows our tendency to trust in riches instead of in Him. He warns us against this danger because He wants us to trust in that which is most certain. He wants us trust in Him and not in uncertain riches.
Challenge:
Are you enjoying the blessings in your life that God has given to you? Would you say you are content with what you currently have, or would you say you long for more in your life in order to be satisfied? Your challenge this week, if you choose to accept it, is to be thankful for what God has given you to enjoy. Thankfulness is the first step to being content in your heart and protects you against always wanting more. Thank God for the place you call home and the memories He has given to you there. Thank Him for the job you currently have and trust Him to move you if that is His desire. Be grateful to Him for the people He has placed in your life and the love you have shared together. Praise Him for the life He has given to you and live that life to the fullest. Take a moment and just reflect on all the ways the Lord has been good to you over the years. Riches are far more than the funds you have in your bank account. God has given you so much to enjoy and you will realize that by being thankful. Have a wonderful week. God bless you.
