Psalm 119:36-37 – Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.

The Palmist rightly understood that covetousness was a threat to walking in God’s way. A heart inclined towards God’s word would help him be satisfied in what God provides. The Psalmist also rightly understood that some things, comparatively speaking, are worthless things. They are of no value for eternity and little value for the present age. He prayed that God would empower and enable him to turn away his eyes and attention from such things. God wants your focus to be upon worthwhile things and the lasting things of eternity, like relationships and love and good memories with friends and family. Not the temporal things of this world, like money, power, position or possessions. The way of the world leads to hoplessness and a greater sense of want. God’s path leads to a life of security, proper perspective and a desire to give to others instead of getting from others.

Challenge:

Where do find your eyes spend most of their time these days? Looking at things you don’t have? Looking at things you shouldn’t be looking at? Many lives are wasted because people find themselves unwilling or unable to turn away their eyes from worthless things. The modern world with its media and entertainment technology brings before us an endless river of worthless things to occupy not only our eyes and time, but also our heart and minds. Your challenge this week is to draw your attention away from these useless things of the world and aim to see what God wants you to show you, which is of much greater value. We are, often, so focused on what we don’t have that we fail to appreciate what God has already provided for us. Perhaps you are looking for some physical item to satisfy you, or a promotion at work that will earn you more money? These only satisfy for a brief season. God is the One who can give you eternal peace and joy. Remember, the things God will show you will always be of much more importance than anthing else this world has to offer. God bless you.
