Mark 9:41 – For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.
John said to Jesus “Those guys are casting out demons and they’re not with us.”, “Relax,” Jesus said. “Anyone who even gives a cup of cold water in My name will be blessed.” Even the smallest kindness done in Christ’s name will be rewarded. A cup of water given to a disciple because he belongs to Christ will not go unnoticed by your Savior. Casting out a demon in His name is quite spectacular. Giving a glass of water is a bit more commonplace. But both are precious to Him when done for His glory. This statement was meant to remind the disciples that God’s work was not necessarily restricted to only their small group.
Challenge:
You should never think that your service to the Lord is ever insignificant or trivial. Even the simplest of gestures done in the mighty name of Jesus will be generously rewarded by God the Father. I find that getting into the habit of doing many little things for others prepares me for the bigger things that God has purposed for me. “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much…” Luke 16:10a. Your challenge this week is to pay close attention to the small gestures of hospitality that you can do for others. Bring a cup of coffee or tea to your wife in the morning so she does not have to get it for herself. Have your husbands favorite cold beverage ready for him when he gets home from the office or comes in from cutting the grass. Grab a Starbucks for your boss or coworker on the way into work. Doing these types of small acts of kindness go a long way for those you do them for. But even more importantly, they bless the heart of God when you do them in His name and for His glory. God bless you.
