Psalm 19:1 – The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
What a beautiful story the heavens tell! First they tell about the immensity of the universe. If we traveled at the speed of light, it would take us ten billion years to reach the farthest point we can see with a telescope. The earth is nothing but a tiny speck in a limitless expanse! Think also of the number of stars and other heavenly bodies. With the naked eye we can see about five thousand stars. With a small telescope we can see about two million. But with the Palomar telescope we can see billions of galaxies, to say nothing of individual stars. Then think about the distances of the heavenly bodies from the earth and from each other. Someone has pictured the distances as follows: if it cost a penny to ride 1000 miles, a trip to the moon would cost $2.38, a trip to the sun would cost $930, but a trip to the nearest star would cost $260,000,000. If creation is so great, how much greater is the Creator! David looked to the heavens and he clearly saw the glory of God declared. He could see it in the blue sky, with the glory of the sun and clouds and the beauty of sunrises and sunsets. He could see it in the night sky, with the brightness of the moon, the awe of the starry sky and the distant galaxies. These together, with their size, their awe, their splendor, shouted to David and all who would see, “The God who created all this is glorious, and this is evidence of His glory.”
Challenge:
Whenever you begin to doubt God, simply look up into the night sky and see the stars. Whenever you feel like God is not doing anything, just look to the morning sunrise and consider that God holds all of the universe in His hand. How easy it is to get discouraged when your day does not go as you had planned. Life is so stressful when you find yourself with more bills to pay than there are bills in your bank account. These are the times when you need to remind yourself of the times when God did show up and met your needs. That time when you thought there was not hope to be found and then the Lord worked it out right at the last minute. If you think hard enough, you will realize how faithful God is and that He is there for you every time. I challenge you this week, to take time to look around you and see the world from a different perspective. When I am driving home in a rush I tend to miss the beauty of Gods creation around me. I miss the family of deer grazing in the field next to my home. I miss the birds singing their song in the trees above. I no longer want to miss the handiwork of Gods creation. I am sure you feel the same way. After all, He has given this world to us so that we would see His character on display. So this week, slow down, take a breath, look around you and see God in the details. May God’s blessings be with you.
