Galatians 5:13 – For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
The apostle Paul reminds us of our freedom in Christ and warned against its being converted into license. Specifically he charged the Galatians not to use their liberty as “a base of operation” for sin to gain a foothold. Rather than liberty being used for lust, the real goal should be love. Rather than being in bondage to the Law or to the sinful nature, the Galatians were to be in bondage to one another. Think back to the time before you got saved, do you remember being in bondage to your own sinful lusts? When you thought going out and partying was the coolest thing do. But if you are being honest with yourself, you would quickly admit the fact that sin flat out stinks. Sin destroys relationships and removes true joy. Sin divides families, distances kids from their parents, and can contribute to physical illnesses. Praise the Lord that believers are free from the lasting effects of sin. So, the liberty to which you were called is not liberty to sin, but rather liberty from sin. Instead of partying and carrying on in the flesh, serve one another!
Challenge:
Be sure to make time to pour yourself into other people, you will find that this is so gratifying and rewarding. Get involved in talking to others who are down, discouraged or struggling. I bet you discover that talking to them about eternal issues will be more exciting and thrilling than anything you have ever done. Get involved in the things of the kingdom, and you will see how wonderfully God will use you. I challenge you to serve someone new this week, someone who would be truly blessed by your assistance. Whether it be through a conversation or an opportunity to pray for them or meeting someone’s physical need. Serve someone. You will never regret doing so and you will fulfill the word of God in this scripture. God bless you.
