Luke 10:19-20 – “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

In the story of the seventy sent out by Jesus, Luke describes their return. They came back thrilled and excited. This is the same experience we have when we are involved in helping someone come to Christ. How wonderful we feel! What a lesson for us to remember the words of Jesus, “do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” When there is success in anything we do for the Lord, we must remember it is His work, not ours. The Lord had given His disciples authority against the forces of evil. They were granted immunity from harm during their mission. This is true of all God’s servants; we are protected. Because Satan was fallen and the disciples were messengers of Jesus and His kingdom, they enjoyed the superior power of God over Satan. Meyer said it well, “If you dare to live in the risen Christ, you share His empire and all the fruits of His victory over Satan.” Truly, if you walk in the power of Jesus the enemy will have no power over you.

Challenge:

All believers in Jesus Christ have access to His authority over the evil and wickedness that is in this world. The real question is, are you living in the authority that is available to you? Are you able to look evil square in the face and say “You have no power over me, I am victorious through faith in Jesus.”? You see, you never have to go looking for evil because it is all around you. But you do not have to be subject to the influence of the enemy because you have the strength of the Holy Spirit always within you. Challenge yourself this week to let the authority of Jesus rule over the trials that will come to you. Has there been a lingering bad habit you have been trying to get over? Exercise your God given authority and take the first step to stopping that habit by confessing to God your desire to quit. If the temptation returns, remember this week’s verse and repeat to yourself “He gives me authority OVER ALL,” and “My name is written in heaven.” Often times, the best way to overcome a habit is to create a new and better habit. Reminding yourself of God’s word is a wonderful habit to possess. God bless you.
